TUTORIAL: MEDINA & FINAL PIECE IDEAS

In todays tutorial we discussed my ideas and potential final piece.

I wanted to look at making a jacket, and Medina agreed that moving away from the shoe form would be a good idea, as jackets have more substance. They are a bit more interesting.

My experimental piece pushing the pins through the mesh was a point I wanted to develop on. If I was to make a whole jacket from this material it could create a very intriguing piece. This would create a rather uncomfortable looking material which looks dangerous on the inside (with the pins sticking though) however aesthetically pleasing on the outside. Obviously this would be an unwearable garment and this juxtaposition between what we want to wear and the fact we can't wear it creates this desire even more.

It's quite a bizarre concept- clothing is supposed to be comfortable but i'm completely taking it out of context and juxtaposing it's original purpose.

We talked about scale and i'm sure I want to create a life size jacket which is 3D, either self standing or suspended from something. It is important for it to look as wearable as possible to 'tease' the viewer, lure them into this false belief, making their desire greater.

Materials:
I will have to research into materials further to find out what will be the best price to use. At the moment I really like the fine Gauze.  However if I was to use the thicker less expensive gauze I will need to research thicker pins/ tacs to fit properly.

Medina said how the pins looked like scales or armour when put together... I could explore this direction of protection/ armour is designed to look powerful, you could also say scales on crocodiles act in the same way- to protect and to intimidate. Sometimes people choose to dress to intimidate?

Wire threading- experiment joining materials together.

Pattern pieces for jacket- charity shops.

I will produce some designs to show how this garment would look.
